The man who conquered sleep

Many great men have walked on Indian soil- many of those whom Bharat Mata has nurtured and cared. Today I write about a man who had been born hundreds of centuries ago who has been an inspiration to millions of students. He was an archer- a relentless one. He had never missed a single aim. He had never been defeated in a war. He used to stay up nights practicing archery. He had conquered sleep in his relentless struggle to become the best archer in the world. Hence his name- Gudakesha. He trained himself to wield arrows with both his hands, Hence his name Savyasachi.

Yes, I am talking about the son of Pritha, Partha better known by the name of Arjuna. He is the protagonist of the world’s greatest epic- Mahabharata. He is known for his enormous valour, patience and generosity. A student of this century has a lot to learn from that man born under the constellation of Falgun (thus called Falguni).

First of all is patience and determination. These two factors are key to enabling your success under any circumstances.

Second, concentration. When you see your target, everything around it vanishes. We find an example in Drona’s bird eye test. Some students of Drona, the preceptor of the Kuru prices, complained that he favored Arjuna the most.  So he arranged a test of archery for students to prove that Arjuna was a supreme archer. He placed a wooden bird on a far tree and his students were asked to shoot it. Yudhistira, the eldest Pandava was called first. Drona asked Yudhistira to describe all that he could see. He named the wooden bird, the tree, the branch, the stream, the sky. Drona in a disappointed manner  asked him to go back. Each and every of his students including his son Ashwatthama  were asked the same question but the answer of none satisfied him. Arjuna was the last. On being asked the same question he said that he could see the bird’s eye and only the bird’s eye. At that point, Drona asked him to shoot. He hit the mark. So, concentration is man’s one of the biggest weapon.

At last we need to hold our duties in life over everything. Let us again read a story. once a bhramin came running to Arjuna to save his cows being stolen by bandits. It so happened that his bow was in the room of Draupadi, the shared wife of the five Pandavas. On advice of Sage Narad, the Pandavas had pledged that only one brother will be with Draupadi for a year. In that period if any other brother enters Draupadi’s room he will be exiled for twelve years. Arjuna did not stop for a second to think and went to collect his bow from the room which was being occupied by Draupadi and Yudhistira. He fought of the bandits and saved the Bhramin’s cows disregarding the pain he would have to bear for it.

For success, we need to be patient, concentrate only at our goal and seek to achieve it with every last bit of energy we have. Remember-

‘To get something, you have to sacrifice something”

Hum Mukhtara

Treatment of Baby girls- A scene from ‘Hum Mukhtara’

‘Hum Mukhtara’ is a drama directed by Usha Ganguly . This drama is mainly based on feminism and a Pakistani village girl called Mukhtaran Mai.
This drama was staged in Academy of Arts on 9th August, 2013. I am very happy to have been a part of audience there for this drama has been beautifully directed. It is a drama that stands out from all as it missed nothing- action, songs, dance, emotions, rhymes and whatever else a drama could have included. The actors are wonderful and so is the narrator- Usha Ganguly itself. a person who does not know Hindi could have understood whatever was said and whatever was done. This drama upheavals your emotions of pain, anger and justice. Till now the images of it float before my eyes. I salute Muktara Mai, the real heroin and I thank Rangakarmee Group to put this play on stage.
And for all those who believe in the spirit of women, please watch this drama if possible, whatever your age may be.

In the first pl…

In the first place, God made idiots. That was for practice. Then he made school boards.
-Mark Twain

For years we have wanted change in our education system. But nobody has ever been able to express what exactly we want, we need. Tonight I make a desperate attempt to express my views on the educating children.

In our education system we gain a lot of knowledge. But we are not taught to distinguish between real knowledge and what is not real knowledge. Having read all the verses of Rigveda and mugging them up is not knowledge, you have to understand them, feel them and apply them. In fact we have to apply what we learn. Everyone can give lectures like me. But I am yet not applying my knowledge. Simply knowing name of a bird in fifty languages, can not tell you about the bird.

Concentration is a very important aspect for studies. We should have programs to improve concentration in students. Daily meditation and pranayam class for just half an hour can help a lot. Concentration is something you really need for memorizing and you it believe or not, memorizing is very essential.

Creativity is something that you need in every aspect of life. The students should be challenged to apply their skill and knowledge in a whole new direction, not something set in front by their ancestors. A report on global warming should not only consist of causes or solutions by scientists, it should also have a part of their idea, the actions they have taken or will take. One should be creative in whatever way they like so when they take their last breaths they could at least say that I found a new type of screwdriver.

Time management is a thing where almost everybody gets confused. Guidance from experienced people can really help the kids. To decide upon your priorities and act upon it, to have a contingency plan, to act during emergencies and to do whatever is needed at whatever time is really confusing. Kids need help in arranging their life into order.

Every school insists on discipline. But when a school is not disciplined itself- where a program does not start as planned, where a substitute teacher is not provided when one is absent, when teachers and students are disturbed during classes discipline from students can not be expected. Only a disciplined environment can make discipline possible. And I have seen institutes constituting more than thousands of students as punctual and disciplines as possible.

Student-teacher relation is very important. Teachers should be teachers not for being highly educated, they should know t teach. Teachers should interact with children in such a way that they listen to the teacher in awe. A teacher should be like an orator on stage and should let students be spellbound. Teaching is an art and I shall say this a thousand times over.

And one more important thing that an education system needs to have ,though it does not have anything to do with study, is that it needs to develop a sense of defense in the child both physically and mentally. Defensive martial arts need to be introduced to the schools. Apart from that a student should be developed in such a manner that a person is called educated only if he can stand up for himself or herself.

Students are buds. Don’t cut it. Nurture it till it blossoms. It will only then spread its beautiful aroma. Only then the bees may collect its nectar.

I want to know your views about the education system. Please share.

None are more h…

None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who falsely believe they are free.- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

We consider ourselves free citizens of a democratic country. But are we actually free? No we are not. We are enslaved in chains of society. We think a hundred times before doing something good till we know it is acceptable to society. We don’t think twice before doing something wrong if it acceptable to society. Society has even changed the meaning of right or wrong. Right is what is acceptable to society, wrong is that which is not. The definition of right and wrong changes with society’s whims. We change with society’s whims. If a cloth is considered fashionable by society than it is fashionable, if considered old-fashioned than it goes out of use. If a film-star wears that old-fashioned cloth then it becomes the trend of the day over-night. A person would wear it even if he likes or not. If not he would be considered unsmart, lacking personality or the stupidest thing in the world. Society leaves us with no choices. It appreciates only what he wants in another person and not what another person has.

Only a few are able to break away from the cage of society. They are the person who say,”Let public go to hell.” They are the person who rule society. In this world freedom for everyone seems impossible. Either you rule or let be ruled.

There have been Developments!

Protesters have reached Rashtrapati Bhavan(President’s House). Protesters jumped barricades set up by the police on Friday. Police had to use water-gun to stop the people. Anger wells up in people and the fire grows stronger day by day. I read in news papers yesterday that some improvements have been announced. They are given below-

  • Women can call 100 to seek assistance to go home at night.

  • Cops to crack down on all vehicles with tinted glasses, curtains.

  • 24-hour cover for areas around malls, discos, eateries and cinema halls. PCR vans are supposed to patrol main roads around Metro stations, major colonies.

  • Number of PCRs shall be raised from 635 to 940.

  • 5% staff from specialized police units to be deployed on night duty toll 1am.

  • All police vans shall have GPS units.

But whatever we may do, situation is not gonna change till people’s mind do. People’s mind is not gonna change till equality is created. Equality shall only be created when all women can stand on their feet. When all women become self-dependent. So girls I request you all to rise to that level where you can defy the world. stand up for your rights and do your duties responsibly. Then only the view of the men may change.

Remember that only a woman can save another woman.
